Medfouna Cooking Class in Merzouga Desert

What is Medfouna?

Moroccan Tagine, Couscous, and Pastilla are internationally famous dishes and icons of Moroccan cuisine. However, the Moroccan desert famous for the Medfouna dish, also known as Moroccan Pizza. It’s a stuffed bread made of meat, eggs, onions, spices, and other ingredients. Amazigh of the Moroccan Sahara Desert takes this pizza as a daily dish and this traditional food is passed from one generation to another. The desert experience is incompleted without testing the Medfouna.

Morning Desert Safari

A morning desert safari in Morocco offers a unique and enchanting experience, with a spectacular sunrise over the golden dunes, wildlife viewing including birds and fennecs, camel rides through the desert landscape, an atmosphere of relaxation and contemplation, and a delicious traditional Berber breakfast to round off the adventure. We recommend that you dress comfortably and bring extra layers for the cooler morning temperatures, as well as water and sun cream to keep you hydrated and protected from the sun.

Program of the Morning Desert Safari in Morocco 

We will take camels from the desert camp riding to high dunes for the breathtaking sunrise. We will start riding around 6 am (it may change according to sunrise’s time in the desert). Upone arrival, we will hike to the top of dunes and waiting fo the sunrise. If you have a camera, it’s better to not forget it to shot every moment of the sunrise. When the sun completely rised, you will have a Berber Moroccan breakfast and have a free time to do other desert activities such as quad biking, sand board, or have fun with the dunes. Later, we take camels back to your desert camp where our morning desert Safari ends.

We will take you on an unforgettable adventure at night in the desert and spend a lifetime moments. If you’re a group, the night will be an extraordineray. Also, if you’re solo, don’t worry because you will have a 100% local experience with us; we will be your group and let you have this memorable experience. 

First, we will take you from your desert camp to the heart of the desert where we will find a group of Berber waiting for us around a fire and playing the Gnawa Berber Music. Greeting with mint-tea and start our soiree under the starry sky. You will absolutely fall in love with the atmospher. You can take pictures to the breathtaking sky with the lighty moon. Have your dinner and continue your night with a group of locals. You can choose to sleep under the starry sky or at your desert camp.

On the menu, you’ll find a variety of succulent Moroccan dishes, prepared with fresh, local ingredients. Tajines are a must, with their mix of tender meats, tasty vegetables, and aromatic spices. You can also enjoy couscous, grilled meat, or fish, as well as fresh salads and delicious desserts, such as almond and honey pastries.

This tour starts in the afternoon through the Moroccan desert, with several stops for photography. On an exciting dune crossing, you arrive at the first destination for a magnificent sunset. We stop to admire the sunset and continue driving through the dunes to finally reach our camp. Here you have the opportunity to take a camel ride, sandboard, and quad bike journey. After your desert experience, you can enjoy a delicious Medfouna dinner and drink Moroccan mint tea. You’ll also have the chance to enjoy our fire show and Gnawa music and dance performance around the campfire under the starry sky.

Camel Ride:

Camel trekking is a quintessential part of the desert safari experience. These gentle giants offer a traditional and peaceful mode of transportation through the vast dunes of the Moroccan desert. To ensure your safety during camel trekking, it’s important to follow the instructions provided by our experienced guides. Always hold onto the saddle or ropes firmly and avoid sudden movements that may startle the camel.

Sandboarding & quad biking:

During your desert safari, there are plenty of activities to indulge in. Sandboarding, for instance, offers an exhilarating way to glide down the dunes. However, it’s crucial to wear appropriate attire, including closed-toe shoes, to protect your feet from the hot sand. Our guides will provide you with the necessary equipment and safety tips to enjoy sandboarding to the fullest.

Similarly, quad biking adds an extra thrill to your desert adventure. Before hopping on a quad bike, it’s essential to attend a brief orientation session conducted by our trained staff. Always wear a helmet and adhere to the designated routes to ensure your safety and minimize environmental impact. Remember to maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and wildlife while quad biking in the desert.

Do’s / don’t: 

While enjoying your desert safari, there are certain dos and don’ts to keep in mind. Always stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, especially in the hot desert climate. Avoid wandering off alone and stay within the designated areas under the supervision of our guides. Respect the local customs and environment by refraining from littering and damaging the delicate ecosystem of the desert.

Don’t forget to bring your camera or a high-quality phone camera to take souvenir pictures of breathtaking landscapes and moments.
